Setting the Foundation: Why You're Not Losing Weight - Behavior
In my previous two posts, I discussed the importance of having a changed mindset regarding your wellness journey and changing your environment to increase the chances of you adhering to your weight loss and wellness journey. Those elements are extremely vital to your wellness journey success. However, at the inner core of program success and adherence is behavior modification. If we can modify our behaviors, we can direct the course of our journey, as our behaviors determine our success. Our behaviors can either lead us where we desire or deter us from achieving our goals. At the root of any journey, whether financial, career, weight loss, or fitness, is behavior modification; because behavior is what matters most. Your behaviors are your actions. Your actions are leading you closer to your goals or further away.
We often think of the outcome when thinking about our wellness journeys. We think about how we'll look at the end, or what we'll accomplish, or save. But, we often about the actionable steps we take to achieve those goals. If you look back at the latest goal you've accomplished, I'm sure there were many elements involved in reaching your goal. Think about your behaviors on a micro level and consider the small action steps that were taken to achieve your goal. For example, you have a goal of walking after work for two days this week. This goal is small; however, think about the micro action steps: 1) You thought about walking 2) You set the goal to walk two days this week 3) You packed your walking shoes the night before or the morning of 3) You placed your shoes in a visible, easy-to-access location in your car or at your desk 4) You stopped working at a set time 5) You took the route that would easily take you to your destination 6) You turn on your favorite workout playlist or podcast 7) You achieve your walk. Although small, there were many actionable behaviors that helped in reaching this goal. Achieving this goal encompassed the totality of those small action steps; therefore, it is vital to think of the entirety of your journey.
Behavior change and modification are the core foundations of BareTherapi's values. It's what we believe because it works. When setting your goals, take some time to think about the small steps, the tiny action items that are not so apparent. This is where success lies.
Behavior modification concludes the three vital foundational elements needed in beginning and achieving your wellness journey. As you know, I'm on my weight loss and wellness journey, and the more I focus on the three foundational elements of mindset, environment, and behavior, I achieve the majority of my daily and weekly goals. Although, not perfect, setting my wellness foundation with these elements helps tremendously.
