How Texting and Talking While Exercising May Potentially Hinder Our Work Outs

IMG_1344.jpg

Although our phones deeply integrated into every aspect of our lives now, using them while working out may be a bad idea. We’re in the gym to either improve our physique or maintain our health, not to inhibit our wellness. Well, according to research, that’s exactly what we’re doing. Studies are showing that texting while working out may reduce our posture stability by 45%, while talking may reduce our balance by 19%. Not only that, you’re also not maximizing your time. Another study demonstrated, during a 20 minute workout, 10 minutes of those 20 were spent in the low intensity zone due to texting, and only 7 minutes were spent in high intensity (compared to only 3 minutes in the low intensity zone and 13 minutes in the high intensity zone without interacting on the phone). Since we’re pretty busy people and want to maximize our exercise time effectively, it’s probably better to ignore the phone call, or respond to the text message later. Meanwhile, kick up your favorite workout playlist for a possibility of an optimum exercise experience. (and yes, studies have found this to be true).
